Thunderstorms northern Spain and the Alps

Wednesday
Slack high pressure lies across central Europe, producing a hot and humid southerly flow across western Europe. Into mid or upper 30s Celsius again for Iberia and southern France, locally 40C southern Spain. Dry for Portugal. A risk of thunderstorms for east and northern Spain. Scattered thundery showers for southern France, the Alps and northern Italy, whilst southern Italy remains dry. Isolated showers inland for Greece and the Balkans.
Widely hot across the heart of the continent, approaching 30C for many, but feeling fresher for Poland and the Baltic states behind a cold front - which brings thundery rain to parts of Ukraine, Romania and Hungary. Dry for the Low Countries and much of Germany. Slack high pressure over western Scandinavia brings a dry day to much of Norway and southern Sweden, whilst northern Scandinavia sees a few showers. A cool north-westerly breeze for the Baltic.

Thursday
The heat continues across central, south & south-western Europe. Widely 30 to 35C or above for Spain, Portugal, Italy and much of France. Around 30C for central & south-eastern Europe. Scattered thunderstorms around the Pyrenees and the Alps, also along the spine of Italy and the Balkans. Largely dry for Greece and the Black Sea, although isolated showers for Romania and Bulgaria.
A frontal system spreads into the Low Countries and Germany bringing areas of thundery rain from early in the day, but thunderstorms are expected to break out increasingly for the French-German border region, advancing north-east later, and extending into Poland. A few showers for the Baltic states, but much of Scandinavia & eastern Europe will be dry with sunny spells, 19 to 22C in southern Sweden, but much cooler in the far north.
